UAE Leads the Charge for Global Energy Security at BRICS Summit

At the BRICS Energy Ministerial Meeting in Brasília, the UAE reaffirmed its dedication to global energy security and the ongoing energy transition. Represented by Eng. Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs, the UAE emphasized the importance of ensuring both secure and affordable energy access while reducing emissions to meet climate objectives.

Al Olama highlighted the UAE’s achievement of universal access to electricity, clean cooking, and affordable heating and cooling, ranking first globally in energy access and affordability. He stressed that the UAE’s mission extends beyond its borders, with investments in renewable energy projects across more than 70 countries, particularly in Africa, the Caribbean, and small island developing states. The UAE is also sharing its expertise in energy financing, public-private partnerships, and technology to promote global energy justice.

Al Olama invited BRICS nations to join the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance, an initiative led by the UAE to advance efficiency standards, encourage knowledge sharing, and support capacity-building for decarbonisation. He also noted the UAE’s regional integration efforts through the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority, which strengthens grid stability and energy security. The UAE’s collaboration with India, including plans for direct power interconnection and participation in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, was cited as a key example of cross-border energy cooperation.

The meeting also featured the presentation of the BRICS Energy Research Cooperation Platform Report and a roadmap for energy cooperation through 2030, focusing on clean energy, sustainable fuels, grid interconnection, and innovation. Through these initiatives, the UAE continues to champion cross-border energy trade, decarbonisation, and global energy security.
